Make the environment boring

Motivation gets the credit, but environment does the work. The urge doesn’t choose in a vacuum; it chooses from a menu of moments, apps, rooms, and moods you’ve arranged. This guide is about editing that menu.

Why friction beats discipline

Every extra step between you and the old pattern is a moment where the wave can break. Blockers work — not because they’re an unbreakable wall, but because they insert a pause at exactly the moment the wave peaks and your judgment is at its lowest. The right comparison isn’t a fortress; it’s a speed bump at the critical intersection while you’re learning to drive sober.

Where the menu shrinks

Devices. A blocker or filter on every device you actually use — content blocker on the phone, DNS filtering on the network, an extension on the laptop. Set the password with someone you trust when possible, or choose tools whose unblocking is deliberately tedious. (Our Tools & Technology section has vetted options.)

Rooms. The bedroom and the bathroom are where most lapses live, because they’re private and unmonitored evening zones. Devices out of those rooms is a real rule, not a slogan — especially after a certain hour.

Evenings. The wave rises when structure ends. Give the evening one concrete anchor — a walk, a gym time, a standing call, a book by the bed — so the hours between dinner and sleep have a spine. An evening with a spine is boring in the exact way that protects you.

The phone itself. Grayscale mode, fewer apps on the home screen, no browser in the dock, notifications trimmed to humans. Every tap of friction is a tiny win before the wave even starts.

The honest limit

Friction is scaffolding, not the building. Its job is to make the first 48 hours and the first hard weekends survivable while your own patterns heal. Later, as the waves grow smaller, you can loosen the bolts. Early on, bolt everything.
